Books I Recommend

You can go crazy buying books on this topic.  I originally checked out EVERY book on disaster preparedness from the library and then weeded them down to the ones I liked best.  Some of the books were focused on hardcore survival which was really not my interest.  I didn’t see myself building a 2 year stockpile of food.  I just wanted enough food to survive a couple of weeks before all the services kicked backed on.   Don’t get me wrong … I totally admire the people who have a serious survival plan.  But I was looking for the Basic Plan.

So these are the books I bought and keep with my Emergency Supplies:

  1. First Aid Manual by the American College of Emergency Physicians
I know how to apply a bandaid.  OK, I could probably handle a sprained ankle, but my nursing skills are limited.  This is a very comprehensive book that will be my medical go-to-book if we can’t get to medical staff.
  2. The U.S. Armed Forces Nuclear, Biological And Chemical Survival Manual
Because of the increase in nuclear arms, I keep this book handy for the horrible event of a nuclear attack. We are on the west coast, so we could possibly be within the reach of North Korea.
  3. Surival Mom by Lisa Bedford is excellent.  This is a great book if you want to take the next step and really invest some time, effort and money into a long term survival kit.  What I like about this book is that she presents the information with a sense of humor.  Some of the survival books can be a bit scary.  She keeps it light while still packing a LOT of information into a nicely formatted book.
  4. Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Your Family Safe in a Crisis by Peggy Dianne Layton
This book is very focused on the food.  Peggy gives a great overview on how to store food AND she provides a bunch of recipes for how to cook with freeze dried supplies.
  5. Organize for Disaster: Prepare Your Family and Your Home for Any Natural Or Unnatural Disaster by Judith Kolberg
I like this book because it is focused on getting your house and paperwork ready for an emergency.
  6. Cooking the Dutch Oven Way by Woody Woodruff
Buy this only if you plan to purchase a Dutch Oven.  It is small but packs a TON of information about how to fry, cook or bake with a Dutch Oven.  It includes 180 recipes!
