Handy Information to have printed and in your binder …
Camp Cooking Outdoors – great tips on cooking outdoors using a dutch oven
500+ Camping Recipes – I highly recommend printing pages 7-10 of this document. The author first explains how to create a Vagabond Stove and Cardboard Box oven. This is handy to have in your binder, just in case you need it. More importantly, the author details how to use a Dutch Oven. He explains exactly how many coals should go on the top and bottom of the dutch oven in order to achieve a specific temperature. This is probably the trickiest part of using a dutch oven, so be sure to have that in your binder if you plan to cook this way.
How to Make a Desert Fridge (or ZeerPot) – this shows how to make a Zeer Pot which can act as a refrigerator with no electricity! It is also a great science fair exhibit. My daughter created one and we tested the temperature. It really did maintain a very cold temperature in the shade! This is handy to have if you end up losing power for a very long time.
No Knead Bread Dough – I keep this handy in case we have a huge earthquake and end up without power for a long period of time. It’s hard to imagine life without bread, so I keep flour, yeast and salt on hand. This recipe would make it easy to make the dough for bread or pizza. I would use my dutch oven for baking.
